Our ambassador

HE Andrew Mace

Ambassador Andrew Mace

Welcome to the website of the British Embassy, Phnom Penh. I hope that you will find some interesting information here on how we are working to strengthen ties between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The relationship between our two countries is varied and growing. These are just a few of the areas on which we focus:

  • We are working with the Royal Government of Cambodia, non-governmental organisations, and the Cambodian people for the democratic and prosperous development of the country. The Department for International Development's programme for Cambodia (worth £14m in 2008-09) supports in particular improved health care, good governance and rural livelihoods. We are also committed to improving coordination among all of Cambodia's international partners to reduce the burden on the Royal Government in benefitting from development assistance.
  • The Embassy works to promote and protect human rights in Cambodia . We have provided funding over the past three years to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, which aims to bring to account those most responsible for the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge regime, as well as supporting training and community outreach around the work of the Court, to support better understanding of Cambodia's past and reconciliation among all its people.
  • We are working to ensure protection of children in Cambodia from abuse. Our programme of assistance has included cooperation on law enforcement, social work and medical support. We want to ensure that Cambodia is no longer a destination for abusers from the UK or elsewhere.
  • Our Chevening Scholarship and Fellowship programme supports Cambodian professionals to study in the UK in areas that will contribute to Cambodia's development when they return.
  • Increasing numbers of British citizens are visiting Cambodia to discover the beauties of its culture, history and natural wonders. More than 84,000 came in 2007. Most have trouble free stays, but we are here to help visitors and residents who have problems. Please check our travel advice before you come, register as a visitor or resident, and find out what we can do to assist.
  • A small but growing number of Cambodians travel to the UK for study, work or pleasure. This website contains information on UK visas, and on visiting the UK.
  • We hope to encourage growth in trade between the UK and Cambodia. Th e Embassy's ability to assist in this area is currently limited, but the British Business Association of Cambodia provides a useful contact for those new to the market, and also runs a programme of events, which the Embassy is pleased to support

We hope that this site will keep you updated on what the Embassy is doing and that you will find the information and the links to be informative. If you have any suggestions on how we can help further, please let us know.
